Flip a coin …

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:21:56 PDT
Seen in the Charlotte airport yesterday: a guy in his late twenties - walking hand-in-hand with his girlfriend- wearing a graphic Tee. The phrase, “Flip A Coin. Heads I get Tail; Tails I Get Head.” Classy.

Gladiator Sandals: The inevitable post

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:22:35 PDT
Some 2000 and odd years ago, an otherwise civilized Roman Empire would get the same kick out of gladiator fights that we now get, say, from watching professional football: As you can see from this ancient mosaic, gladiator footwear was serious business, complete with over-the-knee plates to protect the precious shins. Those shin-plates have been underrepresented in the long and glorious tradition of classical paintings, which more often than not depict sturdy, beefed-up warriors wearing the

Research In Motion (RIMM) Update

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:27:49 PDT
In yesterday's video I mentioned that we wanted to see a pullback to prior resistance near 124 and then to buy the stock once the buyers re-established short term control of the stock. We got the pullback, but it kept pulling back, so the stock should not have been purchased. We never know if a prior level of resistance will act as support, they are only POTENTIAL levels where we want to study price action further for evidence which backs our theory. Right now, I would avoid RIMM until it can sh

So Long, Suburbia?

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:29:30 PDT
Keen readers may have spotted that we’ve been featuring reports about the future decline of the suburbs for a few months now, and now Business Week picks up the theme and interviews author James Kunstler about how the end of the ‘automobile age’ will also damage the communities it helped to build. Kunstler sats that major instabilities in the system will change the way we produce food, the way we conduct commerce, and the way we move around: What about biofuels? We will use all of them, proba

Trends in heart mortality reversing in younger women (EurekAlert!)

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:30:53 PDT
Coronary heart disease mortality in younger women could be on the rise, according to findings in the open access journal, BMC Public Health, published by BioMed Central. High levels of smoking, increasing obesity and a lack of exercise could all be contributing to this disturbing trend, seen in women under the age of 50.

Hispanic Boom: Not About Immigration

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:31:21 PDT
A new Census Bureau Report on demographic trends in the U.S. population came out yesterday, and the buzz is about its estimates and projections of a rapidly growing Hispanic population, fed by relatively high birth rates more than by immigration....

Condom “booths”

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:37:18 PDT
I’m not saying I promote the following product In fact, I think it’s kind of strange- and maybe even encourages (or at least does not discourage) promiscuity. But, well, it’s odd enough it’s worth a mention. Skin tight jeans, super low cleavage, mini skirts and promiscuity - sexuality permeates nearly every aspect of our society. From an early age, consumers are bombarded with mixed messages about “what is sexy.” Now safe sex can be part of the equation. Lifestyles Condoms has a new way of ge

Ahead Of The Curve: Conceptual Domaining

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:41:27 PDT
(image source) Over the years we’ve been on top of many trends, from Spyware, Blogs, Blooks, tubes, and others. Buying trendy domains is a subject which deserves much coverage on its own (I will try to write about it soon) but today I’m going to talk about something I find more challenging, more intriguing: Conceptual Domaining. What is Conceptual Domaining? Conceptual Domaining is figuring out TOMORROW’s trends (generic/descriptive terms!) based on Today’s hot trends (generic/descriptive,

racial classification as an illustration of complexity in government

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:46:11 PDT
I've spent the last two days helping to advise the government on the design of background questions that will accompany the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), a test-like survey of American kids. The background questions are about demographics and students' experiences in and out of school. They help researchers to interpret and explain trends and gaps in the academic performance of our students. The process for designing and administering the assessment is complex. It exemplif

B.Y.O.C. (Bring Your Own Chopsticks)

Thu, 01 May 2008 07:01:11 PDT
There's a growing trend at some of the trendier dining establishments...B.Y.O.C. Yup...that's right. Why? Because it's eco-friendly! 63 million pairs of chopsticks are discarded DAILY! And even though disposable chopsticks came into being as an answer to using up scrap wood, in today's world that just doesn't make any sense.

Global warming may 'stop', scientists predict

Thu, 01 May 2008 07:20:47 PDT
Telegraph: Global warming may 'stop', scientists predict Global warming will stop until at least 2015 because of natural variations in the climate, scientists have said. Researchers studying long-term changes in sea temperatures said they now expect a "lull" for up to a decade while natural variations in climate cancel out the increases caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions. The average temperature of the sea around Europe and North America is expected to cool slightly over the decade

Cellphones used for medical imaging?

Thu, 01 May 2008 07:23:14 PDT
A team of engineers at the University of California at Berkeley has developed a technique for transmitting medical images via cellphones. This potentially could bring medical imaging to the 'three-quarters of the world's population which has no access to ultrasounds, X-rays, magnetic resonance images, and other medical imaging technology.' The lead researcher said that this new system would make imaging technology inexpensive and accessible in non-industrialized countries. via Rolan

The Globalization of U.S. Business Investment

Thu, 01 May 2008 07:23:57 PDT
In this very careful, data-rich, and important new paper from the Dallas Fed -- entitled "The Globalization of U.S. Business Investment" -- economists Mark Wynne and Erasmus Kersting document recent trends in U.S. FDI (both incoming and outgoing): This paper documents some key facts about foreign direct investment flows by U.S. businesses overseas and foreign businesses in the United States. We show how the pattern of flows has evolved, examine the sources and destination of these flows, doc

Rewriting the Financial Stability Report (or the credit boom in a nutshell…)

Thu, 01 May 2008 02:50:18 PDT
Just snipped this from the Bank of England’s Financial Stability Report, published today. It’s the credit boom in a nutshell: A prolonged period of overextension… For a number of years, low interest rates and benign global economic conditions encouraged higher risk-taking by investors and increased borrowing in parts of the household and corporate sectors. Strong demand for financial services and mark-to-market gains from rising asset prices boosted profitability at financial institutions and

Coal Price In World Market and Trade Higher

Thu, 01 May 2008 02:58:54 PDT
As consumers struggle to get used to $4-a-gallon gasoline, there’s another source of energy that is becoming more expensive: coal. The price of a ton of Central Appalachian coal on the futures market was $42.65 a year ago and has risen to around $96, according to figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That increase comes at a time when crude-oil prices have roughly doubled and natural-gas prices have risen more than 40 percent. “Crude oil rises up and then natural gas rises

OPINION: Energy Madness

Thu, 01 May 2008 03:00:00 PDT
For anyone not yet discouraged by the state of U.S. politics, the latest proposal from the presidential campaign trail may cause cynicism to finally triumph over hope. In response to soaring gasoline prices, Senators John McCain and Hillary Clinton have proposed a summer gas-tax holiday-suggesting that motorists will save 18 cents per gallon as a result. That would be a tiny fraction of the dramatic increase in gasoline prices over the past few years, and there's little reason to expect that t

The Art of Aging Gracefully- Part One

Thu, 01 May 2008 03:00:31 PDT
The number one question sent to me from beauty snobs of all ages is-- "How do I age gracefully"? Take a stroll through Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills or Bergdorf Goodman in NYC and you will see how NOT to do so from women who flaunt their latest scars from face lifts, brow lifts, etc. It appears having plastic surgery that looks obvious is the new status symbol, bizarre right? Puzzling as it may be, it's the "designer" plastic surgery syndrome-- women who want you to know they spent a lot of do

Innovator’s Dilemmas: real options in R&D? (3)

Thu, 01 May 2008 03:26:43 PDT
“Traditional valuation techniques often fail to capture or adequately quantify the value created by technology initiatives (…) Anyone who has tried to measure the value of a technology investment has, at some point, discovered the difficulty of presenting a compelling business case using standard techniques like net present value (NPV) or return on investment (ROI).” “Projected cash flows seem meager in comparison to the investment required, or the discount rate chosen to compensate for th

Is solar power actually viable?- by Navtej Kohli

Thu, 01 May 2008 03:30:57 PDT
Navtej Kohli throws some light at the viability issues of much hyped solar energy. As the world is looking at alternative sources of energy, solar power is looked upon as the most viable source. At present solar energy is perhaps the vastly dominant source of energy we use. It just comes in a form we don’t really contemplate, which is oil. The first step of oil formation is the photosynthesis of sunlight by extremely small plankton like plants millions of years ago. These days, we need a qui

Contrabass Conversations guests in recent print publications

Thu, 01 May 2008 04:00:25 PDT
I always enjoy seeing members of the online double bass community appear in print media. What we do here online has, I believe, just as much validity and potency (and has arguably surpassed print media in importance in recent years) as print media, and most of the material published here on doublebassblog.org actually reaches more eyeballs than any of these individual print publications. Still, I can’t help but feel a thrill every time I see a paper publication from someone that I’ve featured p
